Research project

AI adoption: Opportunities and Challenges for SMEs

Summary

Our research explores key questions: What holds Small and Medium-sized Enterprises back from adopting AI? Can structured, low-cost interventions move the needle? Which types of firms benefit most, and how do outcomes evolve over time?

  • We combine a field experiment (RCT) with 80,000 UK-based SMEs, survey and administrative data, to assess changes in AI readiness, perceived barriers, adoption behavior, and broader business performance.
  • We leverage qualitative methods for an in-depth examination of the dynamics of AI adoption in UK-based SMEs
