A new report by UCL School of Management students in collaboration with consultancy firm Capgemini argues that scaling GenAI requires large scale organisational change and not simply technological upgrades. Carried out by the UCL School of Management’s Analytics Lab, the report identifies four key areas that must evolve in parallel to scaling GenAI:
· Organisational Change: GenAI reshapes work, demanding new skills and governance.
· Delivery Processes: Software engineering is being revolutionised by AI-driven productivity.
· Architecture: Rapid tech evolution requires flexible, scalable data and system design.
· Adaptiveness: With GenAI’s future impact uncertain, agility is essential.
Director of the Lab, Dr. Karima Dyussekeneva, said: “Technology breakthroughs and organisations have long been partners; however, the power of generative AI differs from that of previous technologies.
“The agile development of machinery and computer devices has traditionally supported human capabilities and addressed limitations in an assistive capacity. In contrast, the advanced capabilities of AI invite radical changes to managing work in the ways that can either be positive or negative. AI tools can guide decision-making in ways that are both overt and subtle. As a result, implementing AI within organisations is a complex process that must be approached with great care.”
The authors argue that existing practices and regulation for technology-enabled change are based on a set of assumptions that are outdated when applied to AI. If the scaling approach is not coordinated correctly to incorporate widespread organisational change, then any attempt to scale GenAI would encounter considerable uncertainty.
The research finds that a clear AI strategy, incorporating a lean approach to data and tech architecture, agile organisational change and an embedded AI delivery model will allow organisations to succeed alongside the scaling of GenAI.
Ultimately GenAI is not just another technological tool – it is a catalyst for widespread organisational change and businesses and companies will have to rethink their processes, governance, architecture and culture.
